Call for Coaches!

The Halifax Hurricanes Ringette Association (HHRA) is seeking coaches to support its recreational and competitive teams during the 2023/24 ringette season! We are looking for coaches for all age groups from U7 to U19 at all levels including competitive coaches; both head coaches and assistant coaches wanted! Please note that these are volunteer positions.

The deadline to apply is August 15, 2023 by emailing our Director of Coaching, Darryl Cameron, at dc@hhringette.ca!  All that’s required by this date is your name, desired role (head coach or assistant coach), and the level (competitive or recreational + preferred age group) you would like to coach.

Coaching youth sports has many benefits, including:

  • Improving the confidence and skills of young athletes;
  • Inspiring the next generation of athletes by imparting your love of sport, citizenship, values and teamwork to them;
  • Building relationships with your community;
  • Gaining valuable leadership skills; and
  • For some coaches, spending quality time with your own children.

Coaches involved with our HHRA teams can look forward to a positive atmosphere in the locker room and healthy competition on the ice!

Questions & Answers

What is the time commitment to be a ringette coach?

Whether coaching recreational or competitive teams, most coaches will host one or two 1-hour practices per week and attend one game (either home or away); of note, U9 teams do not play games. Most teams (U10 and above) will also attend between two and four ringette tournaments hosted within the Halifax region or in other communities across the Maritimes each season. Additional time is often taken to plan for practices, however all coaches have the support of team managers who take on many of the administrative tasks including regular correspondence with their players’ parents/guardians.

What experience/qualifications do I need to be a ringette coach?

  • Previous experience as a coach for youth/children’s sport is an asset but by no means mandatory.
  • Proof of a clean criminal and vulnerable sector check. We accept valid checks completed in the last 36 months. Anyone requesting a criminal and vulnerable sector check to become a coach with our association will be reimbursed their check fee.
  • Provision of a coaching number from coach.ca if you have one. If not, please register at Coaching Association of Canada.

What courses and training are needed to be a ringette coach?

  • To coach recreational ringette you need to have completed a Community Sport Initiation (CSI) Course which will be offered by Ringette Nova Scotia during the season - this is mandatory.
  • To coach competitive ringette you must, at minimum, complete the Competition Introduction (CI)  course. To be certified there is an on-ice evaluation.
  • To coach both recreational and competitive ringette, the following courses must be completed one time on Coach.ca, some of which are transferable from other sports. Note: To access these course links, you will need to be logged into the locker on coach.ca
  • There is no cost to coaches to complete these courses and training. The association will reimburse all expenses incurred to become a coach and to upgrade and maintain credentials!

I’m interested in this opportunity! How do I sign up?

If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a ringette coach with our association or for more information, please contact our Director of Coaching at dc@hhringette.ca. As noted above, the deadline to apply is August 15, 2023. We look forward to welcoming new coaches into our team soon!
